Kacang Botol

It took a while for the plant to flower. It just grew continuously, creeping upwards until it reached the roof. Then one day, it flowered and we had four angle beans hanging on its vines.

Stir fried with sambal belacan or eaten raw with a sambal belacan dip...Ooooo Yum!

Campfire snack

We had a fire going and the wood were smoldering, just nice for a barbecue. Han must have read my mind as he asked for some food, any food to cook on the fire. The only thing I could offer him was chicken soup out of a can. Han said it was acceptable.
So a pot of chicken soup was placed on the fire.

The boys brought out their books and had a discussion on superheroes while waiting for the soup to be done.
After a couple of minutes, it was supper time - a bowl of steaming hot soup. Ean made roti prata in the kitchen and that got dunked into the soup.

fruits and veg

Nangka ripening on the tree. Wait for its distinctive aroma to waft out which signifies that it ready to be eaten.
Freshly cut nangka.
Nangka leaves sticky white sap on the knife as it is cut. It is advisable to coat a layer of cooking oil on the knife, so that the sap can be removed easily later.
Watermelon.
My compost heap is overrun by melons grown from seeds that had been thrown in with its peel.
Pumpkin

Old cucumber.

Playing with fire

The boys getting mesmerized by the flames.
We have ourselves a little bonfire every now and then. The smoke chases the mosquitoes away, the soot it produces is good for the garden and the boys have the opportunity to handle fire.
Fai decided to be an blacksmith.
He heated his wood in the flames.
The heated wood is then immersed into a bucket of water. His assistant, Han, was sent to collect the water beforehand.
Then hammer and sharpen the tip of the 'sword' with a rock.
Fai went on to make a camp from twigs he and Han had brought back from the beach and leaves from the jambu tree

Fai said it wasn't completed yet, he needed to get bigger leaves for the walls

More of PD Nov 2010

We finally harvested the clumps of lemongrass growing in the backyard and we had enough to fill 2 big bags. We took them back to PJ and distributed handfuls of lemongrass to our neighbours.
I made lemongrass tea with a few stalks.
Incidently I had lemongrass jelly yesterday and it was refreshing dessert. I shall google a recipe for it one day.

Fai found a flat rock riddled with a few holes. He searched for 3 twigs and said that he had made a clock. JY had taught him to tell time a week back.
Once he had the clock done, he asked
" What's the time Che Che"
JY: 3.20
Fai would then adjust the hands of the clock. He asked for a bit of help to locate where the hour hand should be placed.
2 minutes later
Fai: what's the time?
JY: 3.22
A few minutes later he would ask for the time again. This went on the whole afternoon. JY was unperturbed and answered him patiently each and every time.

JY discovered our bedroom spider as she was helping out in making the beds. Hiding behind the mattress was this beauty. A common wolf spider. It used to live in the bathroom. It had grown a bit from the last time I saw it.
K caught it to let the kids examine it closer and we let the it go in the backyard after a while.

4-angle bean in our PD garden

Gorbin and Kushpal found out that four angle bean curry does not taste good. So we have the greenlight to harvest the beans for ourselves. We would usually leave the vegetables in PD for their consumption. Since last year they have been growing pumpkins and lady's fingers with much success.
Kent found it therapeutic to harvest the beans. He was all smiles. It was satisfyinghuning for the beans hidden among the leaves.

Our harvest for the day.

We headed to Port Dickson Restaurant for lunch and had our freshly harvested beans cooked there. It was delicious!!
